Sorry Works! History
Sorry Works! began as an advocacy organization in February 2005 with the goal of trying to encourage physicians, hospitals, and insurers to think differently about the medical malpractice crisis. We wanted healthcare, insurance, and legal professionals to realize the solution was in their hands (as opposed to a legislature) by simply developing disclosure and apology programs that pro-actively heal everyone injured by an adverse event. If hospitals and practices want to avoid lawsuits and reduce the number of claims, do the right thing post-event we pleaded. We initially spent a lot of time attracting media coverage for our concept from numerous outlets, including the Associated Press, Time Magazine, American Medical Association News, and National Law Journal (to name a few!)
We did such a good job of attracting media coverage, that doctors, risk managers, and healthcare and insurance executives began calling us with a simple question: “OK, this apology stuff appears to have promise...I can see how it reduce lawsuits….but how do I actually teach my physicians and nurses to say sorry? How does this work?” A consulting business was born.
In 2007, Sorry Works! Consulting, LLC was created to develop content and provide training resources for healthcare professionals. We teach disclosure! Our training efforts have a simple focus: To help clinicians conceptualize disclosure. Everyone knows disclosure is the “right thing to do” for multiple reasons, but actually doing it – conceptualizing it – is another matter. That is where Sorry Works! helps. From our presentations and disclosure training seminars to our best-selling Sorry Works! Book, new empathy booklet, online disclosure training, videos, audio conferences, and disclosure consulting, Sorry Works! not only makes disclosure a reality, we make it come alive for your organization. We have trained thousands of healthcare, insurance, and legal professionals from coast to coast and around the world. The best-selling Sorry Works! Book has been sold in English speaking countries around the world, and it has been translated into Japanese and Korean. We can help your organization too!
